    A Cappell Choir

Duncanville High School’s a cappella choir has been invited to perform at the opening session of the 2020 Texas Music Educators Association convention in February. The choir, under the direction of Jesse Cannon, is the only high school ensemble invited to participate in the special performance celebrating the organization’s centennial.

“To be invited to perform for the largest collection of music educators in the world, is without question, one of the highest honors any high school ensemble in Texas can receive,” said Duncanville Director of Fine Arts, Steven Moss.

As to why Duncanville was selected for the honor, TMEA administrative director Kay Van Landingham called Duncanville High School choral director Jesse Cannon ‘the real deal.’

"What he and the district are offering those kids is truly phenomenal."

TMEA’s opening program, called ‘It Starts with Music,’ will take place at the San Antonio Convention Center’s Lila Cockrell Theatre on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 p.m.

TMEA is an association of more than 13,000 school music educators dedicated to promoting excellence in music education. Click here for more information.

Duncanville Band’s Legacy of Excellence Recognized at State Music Convention

The Duncanville High School Band was awarded the 2019 Exemplary Band Program Award at the annual Texas Bandmasters Association convention in San Antonio on Thursday, July 25.

The organization presents this prestigious award to the Texas band that has consistently produced an exemplary band program for an extended period of time. One high school and one middle school are chosen each year.

For more than 40 years, the Duncanville High School Band program has been considered a model for other high school programs throughout the state of Texas and the United States. The band program flourished under the leadership of directors Dr. Tom Shine (1980-2010), Brian Merrill (1983-2003), Jeff King (1988-2015) and David Brandon (1996-present).

The Duncanville High School Wind Ensemble has been the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region 20 Honor Band every year since 1980 and has placed in the State Finals ten times. The Wind Ensemble was selected as the 1998, 2004 and 2008 TMEA 5A Honor Band, making it the only band to win three 5A Honor Band awards. Most recently, the Wind Ensemble was the second runner up in the 2019 6A Honor Band Competition. The Wind Ensemble has also been invited to perform at The Midwest Clinic twice and was the featured ensemble at the All Japan Band Conference in 1998.

During those same years, the Duncanville Marching Band was awarded the ‘Sudler Shield of Honor,’ was selected as the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Champion in 1986, 1990 and 2002 and is the only large classification (5A/6A) band in Texas to advance to the State Marching Band Contest every year since 1988. The 400-member Duncanville Marching Band also received first division ratings at UIL contest for more than four decades.
