GENERAL INFORMATION
A school nurse or clinic assistant is available to provide first aid for minor injuries and the sudden onset of illness. If there is an injury or illness beyond our resources, the parent/guardian will be contacted. If it is life threatening, EMS will be called. Schools are not permitted to dispense any medication unless it is provided by the parent in accordance with state law. The following topicals are commonly used in the school clinic. Parents are asked to notify the school nurse if their child may react to one of the following items:
Rubbing alcohol
Hydrogen peroxide
ST37 antiseptic
Vaseline
Oral Gel (or generic)
Aloe vera
Baby oil
Mouthwash
Deodorant
Hand/body lotion/cream
Calamine lotion
Caladryl (or generic)
Saline eye wash
Contact solution
Visine (or generic)
Latex-free band aids
Gauze dressing
Non-adhering bandages
Vinyl gloves
Antibacterial soap
In the event of a natural or man-made disaster, it is strongly suggested that the school clinic be stocked with a 3-day supply of medication and/or medical equipment along with explicit written directions for its use for any student with a chronic medical condition.
School Health Advisory Committee
Duncanville ISD needs parent volunteers to help with the district’s School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). The group is required by Texas law, and its function is to make sure the district’s health programs reflect local community values. For more info, please click here.
