Mrs. Tomeka L. Reeder

Welcome to 8th grade English/Language Arts! I am extremely happy and fortunate to be a part of the Byrd family.  I have been an educator for over 19 years.  I am a Louisiana native, and fell in love with the DFW area when I was a teenager.  At 15 years of age, I knew Texas would become my home.  That dream came true in 2005 and it was one of the best decisions of my life!  I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Grambling State University (Go Tigers!) and later my Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Lamar University.  I love teaching and getting to know my students and watching them grow academically and socially each year.

Out of all of my years of teaching, 8th grade is by far the BEST grade to teach! I find 8th graders to be the most innovative and energetic academic-risk takers of ALL.  These are important characteristics to have when it comes to becoming stronger readers.  In my class, students will have many opportunities to discover new skills and enhance their writing voice, explore many reading genres, and become stronger critical thinkers.  These skills that students aquire will help them analyze concepts with confidence and gain mastery.  I want them to be aware of their growth and know when to use these skills effectively when they communicate verbally and in writring.  One of the biggest milestones a learner can accomplish is not running from a challenge, but facing and overcoming it.

There are many people that are influential in my life.  One of those people is Michelle Obama.  She once said, "You should never view your challenges as a disadvantage. Instead, it's important for you to understand that your experience facing and overcoming adversity is actually one of your biggest advantages."  I strive to help students realize their strengths and celebrate their unique abilities. Just as eagerly, I strive to push them past their academic and social adversities by teaching them the necessary skills to be successful life-long learners.
